From Clay to Charcuterie: A Workshop That Brought People Together

When people consider taking their first pottery class, one question often comes to mind:

“Is pottery hard to learn as a complete beginner?”

At the HUB Station Arts Center in Hudson, NC, seven women recently discovered the answer for themselves during our Pottery Workshop – Charcuterie Board, a three-part experience that combined creativity, community, and a delicious celebration of their finished work.

The answer? Pottery isn’t as hard as many people think.

In fact, three of the seven participants had never worked with clay before, yet every attendee left with a beautiful handmade charcuterie board they were proud to use and display.

From a Slab of Clay to a Functional Piece of Art

The workshop began with a simple slab of clay and endless creative possibilities.

Participants were provided with pre-rolled clay slabs and guided through the process of shaping and designing their own charcuterie boards. Some added textures using stamps and carving tools. Others incorporated impressions and decorative details that reflected their personal style. River rocks were used to help create gentle curves and organic forms while the clay dried.

What made the workshop especially enjoyable was the mix of experience levels. Among the seven participants were complete beginners, intermediate students, and hobby potters who already had some experience working with clay.

Rather than feeling intimidating, the atmosphere became collaborative. Participants shared ideas, admired one another’s designs, and learned together throughout the process.

After construction day, HUB Station pottery instructor and studio apprentices carefully fired each piece in the kiln before welcoming everyone back for glazing.

The second session allowed participants to add color, depth, and personality to their boards before the final firing transformed them into finished ceramic pieces.

More Than a Pottery Class

The final pickup evening turned what could have been a simple collection day into something much more memorable.

The HUB Station Pottery Studio partnered with 3 Drinks Down Beverage Co., the craft beer and wine bar located inside the HUB Station, to create a unique experience that celebrated each participant’s accomplishment.

Attendees had the opportunity to pre-order professionally prepared charcuterie boards filled with meats and cheeses that paired beautifully with wine selections available at the bar. Guests also received information about the featured cheeses and recommended wine pairings, along with a special discount on wine purchases.

Friends and family were invited to join the celebration, transforming pickup night into a lively gathering filled with conversation, laughter, and plenty of pride as participants unveiled their finished pieces.

Many attendees chose to enjoy their charcuterie boards right there at the bar, while others took their creations home to share with family.

What began as a pottery workshop ended as a celebration.

Why Pottery Is Easier Than You Think

One reason pottery can seem intimidating is that many people picture a pottery wheel and years of practice.

Handbuilding is different.

Projects like charcuterie boards are often an excellent introduction to pottery because they allow beginners to focus on creativity and design without needing to master wheel throwing techniques.

Participants in this workshop learned that pottery is less about perfection and more about exploration. With guidance from instructors, beginners quickly discovered that they could create something both functional and beautiful.

Every board that emerged from the kiln looked different, reflecting the personality of its maker. That individuality is part of what makes handmade pottery so rewarding.

A Story of Creativity and Connection

One participant, Addie Faber, described the workshop as an opportunity to reconnect with pottery after previously taking classes at the HUB Station.

Because of scheduling conflicts, she hadn’t spent much time in the studio recently. The workshop offered the perfect chance to return, this time alongside her mother, Kim, who regularly participates in Open Studio.

Working side-by-side allowed them to share the creative experience together while benefiting from Kim’s pottery knowledge and experience. On pickup night, Addie’s husband joined them at 3 Drinks Down to enjoy the charcuterie board and celebrate the finished project together.

Stories like theirs highlight what makes community arts programs special. The finished pottery is only part of the experience. The memories created along the way often become just as meaningful.
